This shield consists of four parts; the top part is red and has a sun symbolizing the sun that shines over New Mexico. The second part is black and has an ancient Zia symbol, honoring the native people of New Mexico. The third part is white and has a crescent moon, representing growing prosperity. The bottom part is blue and has three arrows, representing strength and unity. Above the shield are seven red rays, which symbolize New Mexico’s place as the seventh state to join the Union. Below it is a white banner with “New Mexico” written in red lettering. To either side of this banner are two branches; one branch is an olive branch representing peace, while the other is a yucca branch representing resilience. The words “It grows as it goes” appear at the bottom of the flag in red lettering on a white ribbon.
