This shield consists of three parts; the top part is black and has a horse, symbolizing New Jersey’s role as an early horse-breeding center. The middle part is blue and has three plows, honoring the state’s agricultural industry. The bottom part is white and has three burning torches, representing liberty and enlightenment. Above the shield are three plumes of feathers, which symbolize New Jersey’s place as the third state to join the Union. Below it is a white banner with “New Jersey” written in black lettering. To either side of this banner are two branches; one branch is an oak branch representing strength, while the other is a laurel branch representing victory. The words “Liberty and Prosperity” appear at the bottom of the flag in black lettering on a white ribbon.
