The middle part is white and has a red horse, honoring the state’s equestrian heritage. The bottom part is green and has a yellow sunburst, representing New Hampshire’s agricultural industry. Above the shield are nine stars, which symbolize New Hampshire’s place as the ninth state to join the Union. Below it is a white banner with “New Hampshire” written in gold lettering. To either side of this banner are two branches; one branch is an oak branch representing strength, while the other is a pine branch representing industry. The words “Live free or die” appear at the bottom of the flag in gold lettering on a white ribbon.
