This shield consists of three parts; the top part is red and has a steamboat, symbolizing Nebraska’s role in westward expansion. The middle part is white and has a blacksmith’s hammer and anvil, honoring the state’s industrial workers. The bottom part is yellow and has a pick and shovel, representing Nebraska’s mining industry. Above the shield are thirty-four stars, which symbolize Nebraska’s place as the thirty-fourth state to join the Union. Below it is a white banner with “Nebraska” written in gold lettering. To either side of this banner are two branches; one branch is an oak branch representing strength, while the other is an ear of corn representing agriculture. The words “Equality before the law” appear at the bottom of the flag in gold lettering on a white ribbon.
