This shield consists of three parts; the top part is yellow and contains a plow, symbolizing Montana’s agricultural heritage. The middle part is white and has a pick and shovel, honoring the state’s mining industry. The bottom part is red and has a crossed shovel and hammer, representing labor. Above the shield are thirteen stars, which symbolize Montana’s place as the thirteenth state to join the Union. Below it is a white banner with “Montana” written in blue lettering. To either side of this banner are two branches; one branch is an evergreen branch representing Montana’s forests, while the other is a bunch of wheat representing its agricultural industry. The motto of Montana, “Oro y Plata” (Gold and Silver) appears at the bottom of the flag in blue lettering on a white ribbon.
