This shield consists of two bears standing on either side of a central shield. The top left section contains a grizzly bear and crescent moon to honor Missouri’s Native American heritage. The top right section has a keelboat to commemorate the state’s role in westward expansion. The bottom left section has a miner’s pick and shovel to honor Missouri’s mining industry, while the bottom right section features a train wheel to recognize its railroad heritage. Above the shield are twenty-four stars, which symbolize Missouri’s place as the twenty-fourth state to join the Union. Below it is a white banner with “Missouri” written in red lettering. To either side of this banner are two branches; one branch is an oak branch representing strength, while the other is a maple branch representing peace and prosperity.
