St. Kitts Agriculture and Fishing Overview

Agriculture and fishing

For more than 300 years, sugar production was the country's most important industry, but after decades of sharply declining profitability, the sugar industry was shut down in 2005. In recent years, the importance of agriculture to the economy has diminished, but still around one-fifth of the labor force is in the sector.

  • CountryAAH: Comprehensive import regulations of St. Kitts and Nevis. Covers import prohibitions and special documentation requirements for a list of prohibited items.

Nowadays, mainly coconuts, cotton, yams, sweet potatoes, peanuts, vegetables and bananas are grown. The land that used to house sugar plantations is often used for tourism. About a fifth of the country's area is cultivated.

Two fifths of the land area is wooded, but forestry has no economic significance for the country.

Commercial fishing is a small but growing industry. A catch processing facility has been built with the assistance of Japan.
