Belize Agriculture and Fishing Overview

Agriculture and fishing

Agriculture and fisheries account for half of exports and employ one-fifth of the labor force. Citrus fruits, sugar cane and bananas are important agricultural products, but Belize also invests in non-traditional crops such as soybeans and cashews.

  • CountryAAH: Comprehensive import regulations of Belize. Covers import prohibitions and special documentation requirements for a list of prohibited items.

The country is self-sufficient on corn, beans, rice, beef and chicken.

Previously important revenues from sugar and banana production decreased during the first decade of the 2000s as a result of competition from abroad. Faced with the prospect of EU tariffs on sugar cane to disappear, sugar production then increased and sugar was Belize's third largest export product in 2012.

Slightly more than a third of the land is suitable for agriculture, but only a small part of it is cultivated.

  • Digopaul: Definition and brief introduction of Belize. Major cities are listed and popular images are presented for this country.

The economically important seafood industry (both sea fishing and cultivation) expanded sharply in the early 2000s and reached a production stoppage in 2005. Over-establishment in the industry saw production decline in 2006-2008, but saw a recovery in 2012 due to new investments.
